University of Pittsburgh

African Drumming Ensemble

This fall, the Department of Music is pleased to announce a new ticketing system in partnership with the Pitt Repertory Theatre Box Office. This new partnership will allow us to deliver tickets in more ways than ever. For the first time, we are offering in-person sales during regular Box Office hours while still offering the convenience of purchasing tickets online or over the phone.

Gavin Steingo is one of three new Assistant Professors this year in the Department of Music. Steingo is an ethnomusicologist specializing in African music, but when the Johannesburg South Africa native first came to the United States 10 years ago, he came to study composition.

Carnegie Mellon School of Music and the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music have initiated a program that allows students to attend concerts at each other’s universities free of charge. While both Pitt and CMU already offer numerous concerts that are free and open to the public, this new initiative will provide students free admission to ticketed events.

pamde08_3.JPG The Pitt African Music and Dance Ensemble was on hiatus last fall and gave an open house this semester rather than a full-fledged concert, but what a night it was. Sister Marie Agatha Ozah (who recently completed her PhD in ethnomusicology), directed the ensemble and got the audience involved in a big way.
