Amy Williams Performs Cage Prepared Piano Music

Amy Williams will perform music for prepared piano by John Cage on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. The concert takes place at Conctruction Junction, a local vendor of used construction supplies. The program is part of Chamber Music Pittsburgh's "Pittsburgh Performs" series.

It is a rare opportunity to hear John Cage’s groundbreaking solo prepared piano work, the Sonatas and Interludes, performed live. Lasting just over an hour, there are dozens of screws, bolts, pieces of rubber, coins, strips of plastic, that are inserted into the strings of the piano to create breathtakingly beautiful sounds that are reminiscent of percussion instruments from around the world. Chamber Music Pittsburgh invites you to hear Amy Williams perform surrounded by potential musical instruments (aka “junk”) at Construction Junction to further intensify the experience. The piece is an emotional journey—through the “white" emotions (the heroic, the erotic, the mirthful and the wondrous) and the “black” emotions (fear, anger, disgust, and sorrow) of Ancient Hindu aesthetics, all leading towards tranquility.

Pay what you wish! $10 suggested. Tickets required. All ages welcome. Purchase in advance from Chamber Music Pittsburgh either online or by phone at 412-624-4129. Any remaining general admission tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the door on the night of the event. Subject to availability. The box office opens at 7 p.m.
