Auditions will be held for Department of Music student ensembles beginning Friday, August 28. Our choirs and instrumental ensembles are open to students throughout the University and you are encourgaged to apply regardless of your major. Below, please find specific audition requirements for each of our groups.
Symphony Orchestra

Auditions will be held in my office, 216 Music Building and you may reach me by phone at 412-624-4017. Please prepare two examples of solo music for your instrument — they don't have to be complete pieces but it is certainly OK if they are. They could also be from the same extended movement or larger work and should provide examples of both slow, lyrical and fast, articulate music. Additionally I would like to hear a few orchestral excerpts for your instrument selected from major works by Beethoven through Copland, Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky. There may be some sight-reading and I may request a scale or two.
Jazz Ensemble
Auditions take place Wednesday, Semptember 2, 4:30 – 5:45 p.m. in 132 Music Building.
Traditional Jazz Ensemble Instrumentation: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass: drums, percussion (vibes, etc.…)
No prepared piece needed. We will have different combinations of instruments playing together and reading arrangements of different styles including big band, octet, and some rhythm section only. Each student will have the opportunity to improvise on a blues or on the chord changes of the arrangement.
Heinz Chapel Choir
Auditions for Heinz Chapel Choir will take place Monday through Thursday, August 31–September 3. Please sign up for your audition by visitng the Heinz Chapel Choir Web site or the audition signup site directly.
Men's Glee Club
Auditions for the Men's Glee Club will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (September 1–3), between 3-9 pm at First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh, 159 N. Bellefield. Sign-up for slots at the Freshmen Activities Fair, Sunday, August 30th noon-3, Petersen Events Center.
Women's Choral Ensemble
Audition sign-ups for the Women's Choral Ensemble will be held at the Student Activities Fair at Peterson Events Center on Sunday, August 30 from noon–3 p.m. or by emailing WCE Director, Lorraine Milovac at lmilovac@verizon.net
Women's Choral Ensemble auditions will take place at the following times and places:
- Monday, August 31, 3:30–9 p.m., 310 Bellefield Hall
- Wednesday, September 2, 3:30–9 p.m., 310 Bellefield Hall
