Post-Gazette Preview of Beyond Festival

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Classical Music critic Jeremy Reynolds has provided an in-depth preview of next week's Beyond: Microtonal Music Festival and Symposium, including interviews with renowned clarinetist David Krakauer and Pitt faculty composer Mathew Rosenblum. Krakauer will be the soloist in the premiere of Rosenblum's composition Lament/Witches Sabbath.

"This year’s festival carries the subtitle “Cultural Roots/Cultural Intersections.” The cultural references can be found in the performers’ or composers’ heritage, in folk or traditional music quotations in the compositions and premieres, or in the instruments themselves.

In Lament/Witches Sabbath, as an example, Mr. Rosenblum conceptualized the piece in thinking of his grandmother’s fraught departure from Ukraine, fleeing persecution, in 1919."

The extensive festival also features Gil Rose leading the Beyond Festival Orchestra, loadbang, Rahim AlHaj, Issa Malluf, along with a deep lineup of Pittsburgh new music specialists and composers.
