  • Graduate Student, Jazz Studies

I am a PhD student in Jazz Studies and an Art & Science Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh. As a performer-scholar, my interests lie in exploring the connections between Yoruba music and other cultures, specifically the relationship between Yoruba musical forms and jazz music. Additionally, my research focuses on the revitalization of Yoruba storytelling through music and language, investigating the physical (community performances and festivals/concert halls) and non-physical (digital recordings and cyberspace) spaces through which these stories are communicated and shared in contemporary Yoruba society. As a performer, I have explored this art of storytelling in all four mentioned spaces, with community performance being the most recent space I have performed. For this project, I collaborated with Chamber Music Nigeria.

As a performer, I have expressed my works in three separate yet interwoven areas: storytelling, sacred works, and hybridity of Yoruba sonic representations and other cultures.
