Do plants make music? This is a question that composer/theorist and Pitt doctoral candidate Brian Riordan and Paul Miller, a music theorist and Assistant Professor of Musicianship at Duquesne University, have been addressing in their research. The short answer to that questions is a resounding no!
From coast to coast in the U.S. and all the way to Poland faculty composer and Department Chair Mathew Rosenblum’s recent compositions are receiving frequent performances and admiration of performers and audiences alike.

Composer Elizabeth Brown, who has played shakuhachi for more than 30 years, will talk about its deep influence on her music. She will perform her recent solo Dialect as well as a piece from the traditional solo repertoire, which sounds radical even today.

Pittsburgh contemporary music ensemble NAT 28 will perform its third annual Pittsburgh Composers Project on February 9th and this year’s event features the music of three current Pitt grad students. Selected through NAT 28’s call for scores, the program will include Devon Osamu Tipp’s Blood on the Pavement 1984, Xinyang Wang’s San-Guei, and Cullyn D. Murphy’s Come to/Hypnic Jerk. The three Pitt graduate students’ compositions will be presented along with CMU composer Leonardo Ballada’s Caprichos No.
