Ethan Isaac

  • Graduate Student, Composition and Theory

One of the Composition/Theory PhD students at the University of Pittsburgh, Ethan Isaac's (b.1996) music has been described as "Post-revolutionary" and "an almost Elgarian sweep of broad melody" (New York Classical Review). A composer that deals with topics from Russian novels to urban planning, Ethan fuses many disparate forms of media together along with conventional notation aiming to realize a new musical future. They received their B.A at Bard College and M.A at Rutgers University where they studied under Kyle Gann, Matt Sargent, Robert Aldridge, and Scott Ordway. While having a healthy interest in teaching, Ethan's compositions and research intersect with just intonation, text setting, and audio production. Ethan also performs as an improvisor and vocalist in their own works.

This past summer, Ethan participated in the SPLICE Institute in Kalamazoo, MI and the 15th Sō Percussion Summer Institute at Princeton University, premiering three new works, Waypoints for Flute and Electronics, Tension:Release for Percussion Quartet, and Ouroboros.
